Is Your Water Ruining Your Clothes?

Is your water ruining your clothes?

Hard water (water with a high mineral content) can shorten the life of your clothing, bedding, and the fixtures in your home. Discover what you can do to help boost the power of your detergents.

Hard Water Laundry Symptoms

  • Dinginess or graying, yellowing
  • General soil build-up
  • Stiff, harsh feel of fabrics
  • Weakening of fibers causing tears
  • White or gray streaks on colored fabrics
  • Yellow, red or brown stains
  • Yellowing, especially when chlorine bleach is used What is Hard Water?

Hard water is found in 85 percent of America. It is usually defined as having high levels of calcium and magnesium; the greater the concentration of these minerals, the harder the water. This type of water is common in our area.

The high mineral count builds up, leaving what's called "scale", or "fouling", or "scum" on your laundry and in your fixtures. Hard water also deters soap, resulting in a distinct lack of lather and compromises your plumbing fixtures.

Making It Softer

The reason staining and stiffness is happening to your clothes is because the hard water uses much of the detergent to soften the water instead of to clean the clothes. This means that more detergent must be used at a higher water temperature than in soft water. Softening water by using more detergent has two drawbacks; it is expensive and if the detergent contains phosphate it can add to water pollution.

So rather than using more detergent, water may be softened by calling us to install a water softener system in your home. We will test the hardness of your water and make a professional recommendation based on the results. Water softeners are designed to reduce the calcium, magnesium, and other minerals that are found in hard water.

Water-softening appliances use ion exchange resin beads in which "hardness-ions" are exchanged for sodium ions. After we install this, you should immediately see and feel the difference in your laundry and feel the difference on your skin when you shower.
