What is Medicare Supplemental Insurance?

As we age, we begin to rely on Medicare to get us through the tougher times in life. Medical emergencies, doctor's visits, and prescription medication are all a necessary part of our later years. Unfortunately, Medicare doesn't always cover everything and we sometimes need a little extra assistance to get through trying medical times. This is why many choose to invest in a medicare supplemental insurance plan.

Some might ask, what is a medicare supplemental insurance plan? Medicare supplemental insurance, also known as Medigap, is a policy you can purchase that will cover medical expenses not covered by your medicare plan such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. That being said, medicare supplemental insurance is not the same as a Medicare Advantage Plan. This plan is designed to help you receive medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy will only cover gaps in your insurance coverage. It is also important to note that Medicare will not cover the cost of purchasing a Medigap policy. For your protection, all those selling Medicare supplemental insurance must follow a set of federal laws and regulations. Medigap insurance companies can sell you packages labeled A through N, but all of these policies must offer the same basic benefits.
