This is a piece of advice for the Sacred Heart staff and family members following for ideas about how to give their loved ones the very best care.
Many people with a dementia diagnosis ask for their mother or another family member who is no longer with us.
The person with the memory loss doesn't remember how old they are, that they've lost their loved one. Remember this the next time you are asked or told that someone wants to go home, see their mother, their sister, their husband
Maybe they just need the comfort and love that their mother would have given them at this moment ?
Hugs go a long way in redirecting thoughts about loved ones, especially when it is genuine, followed up by either tucking them into bed like their mother would have done at bedtime or taking them outside to smell some flowers or see the garden and veggies they planted this summer. You don't have to be the person they are looking for, you just have to be there to comfort them ?
Our staff at Sacred Heart give lots of tender loving care, whenever our residents need it. For more information about our Memory Care Neighborhood, support groups, educational workshops, please call 610-814-2700
