Sacred Heart Missionary Sisters Continue to Serve in Berks County

Since 1908, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have served people all over the world. Few Reading and Berks County residents know that they continue serving people right in their own backyard through their personal care home in Laureldale, PA.

The Sisters created Sacred Heart Villa (formerly St. Michael Convent) in 2003 with the vision of providing a personal care home for the Sisters and other seniors of southeastern Pennsylvania. Sacred Heart Villa incorporates the spirit, love and care that have been the foundation of St. Michael Convent, the Motherhouse of the Missionary Sisters.?? With the dream of enlarging their mission of caring for the aged and infirmed, the Sisters began extensive renovations to St. Michael in order to create 35 personal care residential rooms.?? When the renovations were completed, Sacred Heart Villa was born. Sacred Heart Villa officially opened her doors to her first new residents in May 2004. There are 57 Sisters and approximately 40 other senior residents (when fully occupied) living at Sacred Heart Villa.

The facility has two residential buildings, a remodeled dining room, a new fireside lounge, library, café and beauty shop. The chapel remains in the middle of the facility for it truly is the Heart of the community. Each new residential room provides an individual with privacy, safety and security in an environment of beauty and grace.??

About the Sacred Heart Missionary Sisters

The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an international congregation of over 800 religious women. The United States Motherhouse is located in Reading, Pennsylvania. What began with a mere eight Sisters emigrating from Germany in 1908 grew to 408 United States Sisters. Today, there are 91 Sisters in the United States province which extends over six states and Mexico.??The charism statement of the Sisters is "Being graced by the love of Christ we are called to respond to His love and to make that love present to everyone." In responding to God's call, each Sister, including the Sisters who are retired and infirmed, uses the gifts given her to answer the needs of God's people.??In the 103 years the Sisters have been in the United States, they have cared for newborns, single mothers, orphans, the elderly in nursing homes and the terminally ill. From the beginning of life, they have tended all with great care and compassion. The Sisters are very committed to continuing their mission of bringing God's love to everyone.
