The Walk to End Alzheimer's - Why We Walk

The weather wasn't great at 7:30am on Saturday, October 1th when we began setting up at Kutztown University for the Lehigh Valley/ Berks communities but the rain did stop for the walk! I think this was the coldest walk in about 6 years but in spite of that, I think we had as many or more in attendance than years past.

Thank you to everyone who braved the cold to volunteer and participate, thanks to everyone who donated, thanks to everyone who donated items for the raffle (Wes Muckey from Nolde Forest Pottery donated beautiful redware and Barberry Gifts donated a big basket full of yummy smelling candles on behalf of the Sacred Heart Super Friends).

Sacred Heart Super Friends team was small but great in spirit! We mourn the loss the the lovely people and families who entrusted the care of their loved ones to us living with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. We honor the lives of those living with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia by giving them the best care we can and lots of tender loving care.

• Alzheimer's disease is the only cause of death (in the top 10 causes of death in the this country according to the CDC) that is on the rise.
• There are over 5.4 million living with Alzheimer's disease in this country.
• If you include all the other forms of dementia in this country, that number rises to over 13 milion.
• Someone is diagnosed with this disease every 67 seconds in this country.
• It is not an old person's disease - I'e had people in their 30's , 40's and 50's in my early onset support groups.
• If we do not find a way to slow, prevent or cure this disease, the number of diagnoses is expected to rise to over 16 million by 2050.
