Hunterdon Medical Center Physician Kevin Mooney LeavesPhillips-Barber Family

After 26 years of practicing medicine in Hunterdon County, Kevin Mooney, M.D., Family Practice Physician at Phillips-Barber Family Health Center in Lambertville has left to start the next chapter of his career.

"I am not retiring, I plan to do locums and work six months out of the year for the rest of my life, hopefully up in Canada to be near family," explained Dr. Mooney. His last day at Phillips-Barber was May 31st.

Dr. Mooney went to Medical School in Canada and upon graduation went to practice medicine in the Yukon Territory where he was the first doctor to work in the small community of Furo. "We had a four bed hospital in Furo then I moved to Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon, where we had ten doctors and a slightly larger hospital," stated Dr. Mooney.

After three years in the Yukon, Dr. Mooney went to practice medicine in Zambia, Africa and then to South Africa where he worked in a mission hospital. He traveled back to Eastern Ontario Canada and practiced medicine for a few years and decided he was interested in teaching. He has been teaching residents since 1977, where he taught and practiced medicine in Canada, Illinois and in Maine before making the move to Flemington, NJ and becoming part of the staff at Phillips-Barber Family Health Center and on the faculty of Hunterdon Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency Program.

While at Hunterdon Medical Center, Dr. Mooney was named Physician of the Year in 2003 by the ARC of Hunterdon. "I can't imagine not practicing medicine. There is a need for family practice in the United

States and Canada. I am enthusiastic and looking forward to the

future," stated Dr. Mooney. Dr. Mooney will spend six months of the

year working in Montreal and helping to take care of his mother who is 89.

Dr. Mooney went on to say, "Being at Hunterdon Medical Center has been the best experience, the physicians, nurses and staff is fantastic.

This is an oasis and we are so fortunate to have a hospital like this in our community. I will miss my patients, the residents and my colleagues. We have been privileged to have great residents. Someone like Elizabeth Koorie, M.D. was talented the day she walked through the door." Dr. Koorie graduated from the Family Medicine Residency Program in 2008 and is a physician at Phillips-Barber Family Health Center. In addition, Cindy Barter, M.D., Family Practice Physician has

joined the practice. Dr. Barter will also take over Dr. Mooney's

position as the Medical Director for the Hunterdon County Department of

Health. Most of Dr. Mooney's patients will be transitioned to Dr.

Koorie and Dr. Barter. "I don't worry about my patients; I know they are in good hands," stated Dr. Mooney.

Hunterdon Healthcare Introduces Dermedics

Hunterdon Healthcare introduces a new service called Dermedics, laser
skincare available at Hunterdon Family Medicine located in the Hunterdon
Medical Pavilion, 190 Rte. 31, Ste. 500 in Flemington.

Dermedics provides laser treatments for acne, skin rejuvenation, sun
damaged skin, brown spots, facial veins and rosacea.  Dermedics uses the
IsolazT Laser System for revolutionary acne therapy and skin
rejuvenation.  It is the only therapy in the world that combines a
vacuum to apply gentle pressure on an individual's pores with a
painless laser to help destroy the acne causing bacteria, resulting in
radiant clear skin.  The laser light and vacuum energy can also help to
treat sun-damaged skin, brown spots and tiny broken capillaries,
purifying the skin from the inside out.

In addition, the service offers laser hair removal and laser treatment
for cellulite.  Cellulite can be treated with the Tri-ActiveT Laser
Dermology(SM) system which combines the use of six diode lasers with
gentle suction and massage. The massage works beneath the skin to
stimulate lymphatic drainage and breaking up the connective tissue
surrounding fat. This results in a tighter appearance in the treated
area. The heat stimulates microcirculation, which restores the skin's
normal balance and provides a healthier appearance.

This service is provided by Jerrold Gertzman, M.D. and Stacey
Fornarotto, MS, PA-C. Dr. Jerrold Gertzman is a family practice
physician at Hunterdon Family Medicine. After receiving his medical
degree from Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Gertzman completed
his residency in Family Medicine at Hunterdon Medical Center.  He is
certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and a member of The
American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery.  Stacey Fornarotto, MS,
PA-C is a Physicians Assistant with Hunterdon Family Medicine.  Ms.
Fornarotto received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology From
Trenton State College.  She graduated with honors from Robert Wood
Johnson's Physician Assistant Program where she earned her Masters
degree.  She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants
and the New Jersey State Society of Physician Assistants.  Ms,

Hunterdon Healthcare Celebrates National Nurses' Week

Each year Hunterdon Healthcare celebrates its nursing staff during
Nurses' Week. "Nurses: Building a Healthy America," is the theme
for Nurses' Week 2009, as selected by the American Nurses Association.
This national recognition is celebrated May 6-May 12, the birthday of
Florence Nightingale, who is the founder of nursing as a modern
profession. This celebratory week also incorporates National Student
Nurse Day and National School Nurse Day as well. Nurses' Week helps
raise awareness of the value of nursing and aids in educating the public
about the role nurses play in meeting the health care needs of the
American people.

Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that
embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions
because of the many opportunities the profession offers. Nurses have
many roles in varied settings, such as hospitals, physician offices,
schools, clinics, long term care, and research. Nurses have a passion
for their profession and their patients, serving as patient advocates
and exhibiting a strong commitment to patient safety.

Hunterdon Healthcare employs over 400 nurses. The nurses of Hunterdon
Healthcare achieved Magnet designation.  This prestigious award
recognizes hospitals for excellence in nursing care.   Only 5.1% of all
health care organizations in the United States have achieved Magnet
status.

One of the highlights of Hunterdon Healthcare's recognition of its
nursing staff is the Blessing of the Hands Ceremony. The ceremony,
performed by Chaplain Jim DeVries, touches the hearts of the dedicated
nurses who are an integral part of Hunterdon Healthcare's full circle
of care. The Blessing of the Hands is from In Praise of Hands by Diann
Neu. This Nightingale Moment was adapted by Corlette Pierson, Pastoral
Care Resident at Rusch-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in
Chicago, IL. The Blessing, called Nurses' Hands reads:

Blessed be these hands that have touched life.
Blessed be these hands that have felt pain.
Blessed be these hands that have embraced with compassion.
Blessed be these hands that have been clinched with anger or withdrawn
in fear.
Blessed be these hands that have drawn blood and administered
medicine.
Blessed be these hands that have cleaned beds and disposed of wastes.
Blessed be these hands that have anointed the sick and offered
blessings.
Blessed be these hands that grow stiff with age.
Blessed be these hands that have comforted the dying and the dead.
Blessed be these hands, we hold the future in these hands.
Blessed be our hands for they are the work of Your hands, O Holy One.
