Free Skin Cancer Screening Offered By Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center

When: May 27 @ 6:00pm
Where: Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center's Office

Free Skin Cancer Screening Offered By Hunterdon Regional
      Cancer Center

Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center will kick off its skin
cancer awareness campaign with two free screenings in May.
The skin cancer screenings will be held on Monday, May 24th
      from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

and Thursday, May 27th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The
screenings will be completed by local dermatologists, Carter
Abel, MD, and Robert Ilowite, DO on May 24th and Christopher
Cassetty, MD and Carter Abel, MD on May 27th.

People who attend the program will be given a full body
screening by a board-certified dermatologist. The event will
also include educational information on skin cancer
prevention and detection, and will address melanoma and
reducing mortality rates, but will also address non-melanoma.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), cancer of the
skin is the most common of all cancers, accounting for nearly
half of all cancers in the United States. More than 1 million
cases of non-melanoma skin cancers are found in this country
      each year.

The two most common types of non-melanoma skin cancers are
basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. About 75%
of all skin cancers are basal cell. They are most common on
areas exposed to the sun such as the head and neck. They are
usually slow growing cancers and rarely spread to distant
parts of the body. However, if not treated, they can grow
into nearby areas and invade the bone or other tissues
      beneath the skin.

Squamous cell carcinomas account for 20% of all skin cancers.
Like basal cell, they also form on sun-exposed areas.
Squamous cell cancers are more likely to invade tissues
beneath the skin, and are more likely to spread to distant
parts of the body. Melanoma is the skin cancer to watch out
for. It accounts for only four percent of skin cancers, yet
causes 79% of skin cancer deaths.

Too much exposure to strong sunlight, especially when
resulting in sun burns, is one of the major risk factors for
developing skin cancer. As the warm summer months approach
and people head outdoors, their risk increases. But there are
things people can do to limit their exposure to the sun.

Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center suggests the following
strategies for protecting yourself from sun exposure.

? Wear a hat, protective clothing and plenty of sunscreen
      with a

sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater, applied 20
minutes before going into the sunlight and reapplied every
      3-4 hours.

? Avoid exposure during 10 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when the
      sun's

rays are strongest.

? Remember that sunlight can reflect off water, sand, and
      concrete

and can reach below the water's surface.

? Children need extra protection. Encourage them to play
      in the

shade, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen
      regularly.

The earlier a skin cancer is detected, the greater the chance
for successful treatment. Spots on the skin that change in
size, shape or color should be seen by a doctor right away.
Skin cancers are rarely painful. Any unusual sore, lump,
blemish, marking, or change in the way an area of the skin
looks or feels may be a sign of skin cancer.

Many people may not realize that skin cancer screening is an
exam that is usually covered by their insurance. In addition,
individuals who have been seen or been referred to a
dermatologist should continue to see the dermatologist for
more comprehensive exams than those of a community screening.
This community screening is open to individuals who have not
been screened within the past 15 months, and who have not
been under the care of a dermatologist. Registration for the
      free screening is limited.

To register call 908-237-5445.

For more information, contact:

      Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center

Mother's Day is a time to commemorate and celebrate
motherhood. Ten years ago, Mark Wetter of Hillsborough
wanted to do something special in honor of his mother Joyce,
who had passed away from breast cancer. Mr.

Wetter approached Tamra Campanella, Director of Hunterdon
Health and Wellness Centers in Whitehouse Station and
Clinton, about creating an event to support breast cancer
programs in our community and also to honor "moms."

Mrs. Campanella's mother, Sally Tibbitts of Washington, is a
breast cancer survivor, so the cause was close to her

heart. The Family Fun Walk and Run was created and the 1st
      year 150

walkers and runners attended the event, which raised $3,000
for Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center. Today, nearly 700
runners and walkers from all over New Jersey come out to
enjoy the Family Fun Walk and Run.

Last year, the event raised over $20,000 for breast care

FREE ORAL CANCER SCREENING OFFERED BY HUNTERDON REGIONALCANCER CENTER

When: Apr 19 @ 6:00pm
Where: Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center's Office

FREE ORAL CANCER SCREENING OFFERED BY

HUNTERDON REGIONAL CANCER CENTER

It's tempting to ignore that persistent sore in your
mouth that won't heal, or that nagging pain in your mouth
that won't go away. After all, the physician or dentist will
probably tell you that it most likely will be nothing…but why
take the chance? Those symptoms could be early warning signs
of oral cancer, and getting an oral cancer screening by a
physician or a dentist could literally save your life.

That is why Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center (HRCC) is
offering a free oral cancer screening to people 18 or older
      on Monday, April 19th from

6-8 p.m. The screening will be conducted by oral surgeon
Olumide Olawoye, DDS and ear, nose and throat specialist
Anoli Maniar, M.D. at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), oral
cancer is a cancer that starts in the mouth. It includes the
lips, the inside lining of the lips and cheeks, the teeth,
the gums, the front two-thirds of the tongue, the floor of
the mouth below the tongue, the bony roof of the mouth and
the area behind the wisdom teeth. Oropharyngeal cancer
occurs in the part of the throat just behind the mouth.

"During the free screening, we will thoroughly examine all of
these areas to check for abnormalities," explained Dr.
      Olawoye.

According to Dr. Olawoye, if you are in doubt about
getting an oral cancer screening, consider the following
      signs and symptoms.

? A sore in the mouth that does not heal (most common
      symptom)

? Pain in the mouth that doesn't go away

? A persistent lump or thickening in the cheek

? A persistent white or red patch on the gums, tongue,
      tonsil, or

lining of the mouth

? A sore throat or a feeling that something is caught in
      the

throat that doesn't go away

? Difficulty chewing or swallowing

? Difficulty moving the jaw or tongue

? Numbness of the tongue or other area of the mouth

? Swelling of the jaw that causes dentures to fit poorly
      or become

uncomfortable

? Loosening of the teeth or pain around the teeth or jaw

? Voice changes

? A lump or mass in the neck

? Weight loss

The ACS estimates nearly 28,500 new cases of oral and
      oropharyngeal

cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.

When patients

newly diagnosed are carefully examined, about 15% will have
another cancer in a nearby area such as the larynx, esophagus
or lung. Another 10-40% will develop cancer of one of these
areas or a second oral cancer at a later time.

"The good news is, early detection offers the best
opportunity for successful treatment. In addition, there are
things you can do to lessen

your risk for developing oral cancer," said Dr. Olawoye.

"You

should stop all types of tobacco use. About 90% of people
